How to Choose a Prom Dress for Your Body Shape

The most important rule for prom is simple: wear what makes you feel incredible. There's no such thing as a "wrong" body for any dress. But if you're not sure where to start, knowing which shapes and details highlight what you love about yourself can make shopping much easier.

Here's our guide to choosing a prom dress for your shape, plus the necklines, fabrics and fit details worth knowing before you buy. You can browse every style in our prom dresses collection.

If you're curvy with a defined waist (hourglass)

Your waist is your focal point, so choose styles that follow your natural shape.

  • Try: corset bodices, fitted satin maxis, wrap and ruched styles, and mermaid or fishtail skirts.
  • Necklines: sweetheart, plunge and off-the-shoulder all work beautifully.
  • Shop: corset prom dresses and satin prom dresses

If you're fuller on the bottom (pear)

Balance your silhouette by drawing attention to your shoulders and neckline, with a skirt that flows rather than clings.

If you're fuller on top (inverted triangle)

Look for supportive bodices and skirts with movement and volume to balance broader shoulders or a fuller bust.

  • Try: structured corsets with good support, A-line skirts, and dresses with detail or a split at the skirt.
  • Necklines: V-necks and plunge necklines lengthen the upper body. Wide straps add support.
  • Tip: check the fit notes on each product page. Some styles are marked as small on top, and we'll tell you if we recommend sizing up.

If you're straight up and down (rectangle)

Create shape and curves with structure, cut-outs and detail at the waist.

  • Try: corset bodices, ruched waists, belted or cinched styles, and backless designs.
  • Fabrics: satin and sequins add dimension and catch the light.
  • Shop: backless dresses and sequin prom dresses

If you carry weight around the middle (apple)

Choose dresses that define the narrowest part of your torso and flow over the rest.

  • Try: empire waists, draped and ruched fabrics, A-line skirts and flowing chiffon.
  • Necklines: V-necks, cowl necks and halternecks draw the eye upwards.
  • Shop: halterneck dresses

If you're petite

  • Choose streamlined shapes that won't overwhelm your frame, like fitted satin or a slim A-line.
  • Thigh splits and V-necklines create the look of extra length.
  • Check the length from shoulder to hem on each product page and compare it with your height plus heels. If it's too long, a simple hem alteration works on most styles.

If you're tall

  • You can carry dramatic shapes and statement prints with ease.
  • Look for maxi lengths that reach the floor in your heels. Again, the length on each product page is your best friend.
  • Shop: maxi dresses

Quick guide to necklines

  • Sweetheart: romantic and flattering. Defines the bust.
  • Plunge or V-neck: lengthens the neck and upper body.
  • Off-the-shoulder: shows off your shoulders and collarbones.
  • Halterneck: draws the eye upwards and shows off your arms and shoulders.
  • One-shoulder: modern, asymmetric and striking in photos.
  • Strapless: classic and elegant. Choose a structured bodice for support.

Don't forget the underwear

A backless or plunging dress needs the right support underneath. Take a look at our bra solutions, so you can wear the dress you love with confidence.

Getting the size right

  • Measure your bust, waist and hips, and compare them with our size guide.
  • Check the stretch rating on each product page. A higher number means more give.
  • If you're between sizes in a fitted or corset style, go with your larger measurement. It's easier to take a dress in than let it out.
